SERRA HIGH IN THE NEWS!
SERRA HIGH AND THE MAYOR!!!!

Thursday, February 15, Serra students produced a multi-camera YouTube webcast at the San Diego Civic Center Featuring Mayor, Kevin Faulconer.  The SoCal Hospitality and Tourism Conference attracted over 500 high school students.   Our Serra students showed true talent and professionalism. Thank you for your support!

WALK-OUTS for Gun Control:

We believe strongly in our students as and they have made clear to us that they believe some form of gun control is needed. WE HEAR YOU!

There are 3 walk outs planned for March 14, March 24 and in addition April 20th. These are student led walkouts across the nation.
The March 14th 2018 is a 17 minute walk out and the March 24 and April 20 is a full day missed of school. We acknowledge that individuals have a right to demonstrate to support a cause. More information will be coming on this and what the expectation is and what to expect. We want to make sure the walk out is positive and a forum is held for expression of ideas and opinion but is structured and safe. We support our students but it has to have impact, to have impact it has to be thought about so we don't detract from the cause. Please if your children are talking about this let them know information is coming but also talk about 17 minutes being just that and not more. That detracts and our point gets lost if student take advantage.

MORE INFORMATION COMING IN UPCOMING WEEKS about how we are going to address each one. Please read the article and talk with your children about where their efforts should be in regards to these dates. Where are they going to make the most positive impact.

Mr. Villanueva class today was presenting videos they had made for the iVIE competition. The videos were AMAZING! Great sound, voice overs, editing, and much more! I was very impressed. Topics included How to Videos, and Public Service Announcements! Good luck for the competition.

Students gave "warm and fuzzies" and in addition the student who produced the video was able to critique their own work verbally to the other students in the class saying what they liked, struggled with, and would change. VERY reflective!

Teacher Feature!
ROSA VALDEZ--English and Spanish

This is Rosa Valdez door. She uses it every day to engage students in Spanish and give them words of encouragement. Wait to go Rosa!

Denise Litt--Biology

I did a fun kinesthetic activity today and yesterday with biology. The kids each had a card with some letters and numbers on it. They represented embryonic cells early in development. Then I read out for them to step forward or backward depending on if they had certain number ranges, or letter combos until the students were spread out into 4 rows. This was supposed to represent cells differentiating into brain cells, ectoderm mesoderm (kidney, muscle, heart, immune etc..), germ cells (sperm and egg), or stayed stem cells. If they stepped forward they genes were turned on and if they stepped backwards the genes were turned off. Afterwards we discussed what each part of the activity was representing. All the classes expressed that they liked the activity and wish we did more like it.

CHEER
The saying it takes a village to raise a child really holds true- This past Saturday parent volunteers came together very early in the morning to beautify the new practice space for the Serra Cheerleaders. Way to go team. We appreciate you for your dedication and commitment to our girls. We look forward to the finished project.

ROTC
"Serra Navy JROTC held its Annual Military Inspection passing it with flying colors.  "They trained very hard for this throughout the year", said BM1 John Prior, Naval Science Instructor. The Unit, with 150 cadets strong, flawlessly executed muster, personnel inspection, and conducted a pass & review ceremony for VIP's from the Navy, Army, Coronado High School Students, and Serra administrators."

"Serra Team advances to Semi-Finals Round CyberPatriot Competition. After advancing in the State Round the hard work, dedication, and commitment paid off with "

What is CyberPatriot?  CyberPatriot the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air Force Association (AFA) to inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation's future. At the center of CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition. The competition puts teams of high school and middle school students in the position of newly hired IT professionals tasked with managing the network of a small company. In the rounds of competition, teams are given a set of virtual images that represent operating systems and are tasked with finding cybersecurity vulnerabilities within the images and hardening the system while maintaining critical services.  Teams compete for the top placement within their state and region, and the top teams in the nation earn all-expenses paid trips to Baltimore, MD for the National Finals Competition where they can earn national recognition and scholarship money."

If cyber security is your profession or field of work and you are interesting in coaching or mentoring Serra's CyberPatriot team next school year, contact Chief Jeff Feehley, Naval Science Instructor jfeehley@sandi.net."
