Tami Thoro

As the bell rings and students quickly find their seats, all eyes are on the teacher at the front of the room.  Tami commands the attention of her students--she states the directions to begin once and students listen as she reviews the purpose of the day:  Students will write a narrative in order to show their understanding of the short story plot structure that includes literary devices.  After reviewing the purpose of the day, Tami reviews prior lesson learning objectives that will contribute to their success on the goal of today.  She questions students using calling cards, and when a student gives her limited response, she asks another question so that they have to dig deeper.  This yields more sophisticated and thorough responses.  Finally, before students begin writing, she reviews the rubric that students helped to create so that students understand how their work will be assessed.  Tami uses humor to keep students engaged and attentive--this is evidenced by the smiles on their faces and the laughter that fills the room on several occasions.

San Diego Military Family Collaborative- CPSA coalition ---not just for military

Our next meeting on Thursday the 25th at Farb Middle School.  If you'd like more information about these topics including overall community safety, please consider attending Community Prevention and Safety Alliance meetings held on the fourth Thursday of each month at Farb Middle School from 9:15am-11:15am. This group is part of the San Diego Military Family Collaborative and we encourage all parents and community members to attend!

Did You Know?

·         Counterfeit prescription pills made to look like OxyContin, Xanax, Hydrocodone, Ecstasy/MDMA and other drugs have been seized by law enforcement in San Diego.

·         The counterfeit pills and tablets are identical in appearance to legitimate pills and tablets from a pharmacy.  These counterfeit pills and tablets contain other drugs that have caused overdoses and deaths.

·         People on the streets cannot tell the difference between the real pills/tablets from a pharmacy and the counterfeits ones.

·         Youth and adults have overdosed and died from the counterfeit prescription pills in San Diego.

·         The counterfeit pills have contained fentanyl.  Fentanyl is a very powerful synthetic opioid. Fentanyl is 100 times more potent than morphine and 30 to 50 times more potent than heroin.

·         The number of overdose deaths in San Diego where fentanyl has been found in toxicology tests in death investigations has almost tripled in one year (from 2016 to 2017).

What is fentanyl?

National Institute on Drug Abuse for Teens Prescription Drug Facts

Prescription drug misuse has become a large public health problem, because misuse can lead to addiction, and even overdose deaths. For teens, it is a growing problem:

·         After marijuana and alcohol, prescription drugs are the most commonly misused substances by Americans age 14 and older.

·         Teens misuse prescription drugs for a number of reasons, such as to get high, to stop pain, or because they think it will help them with school work.

·         Many teens get prescription drugs they misuse from friends and relatives, sometimes without the person knowing.

·         Boys and girls tend to misuse some types of prescription drugs for different reasons. For example, boys are more likely to misuse prescription stimulants to get high, while girls tend to misuse them to stay alert or to lose weight.

What Can You Do?
One the most important things you can do in your own home is to make sure you’ve secured painkillers, anti-anxiety and stimulant medication in a safe place and out-of-reach. Many teens say their parent’s or grandparent’s medicine cabinet is where they started abuse.

Grief counselors were on campus in order to help students and staff and a remembrance for her is schedule for next week organized by the students.

ATHLETICS
Boys basketball: Had an amazing win over our rivals Patrick Henry. It was an amazing game as they battled it out. Congrats!

Girls Rugby:  They played a total of 4 games, and won them all. These ladies scored a total of 15 trys totaling 89 points. More importantly, their sportsmanship was above reproach, even called out specifically by the referee after the matches.

Right now Life University has offered Maddison Zaben a scholarship, and Michaela Freitas- Gabel had been in contact with Long Island University.

Cheer: Fundraiser!!!

ROTC:
Congratulations!

Our Serra CyberPatriot team advances to the State Round in the Gold Division.  Nine more points would have placed us in the Platinum Division (Top 30). This is the only division that can qualify for Nationals.  The lowest scoring team in the Platinum Division scored a 308.  We scored 300.  Nine more points were needed, and that was not a lot of points to overcome since the top team in Platinum scored a little over 500.  The Gold (Mid 40%), and Silver (Lower 30%) divisions will all compete within their own division in the State Round.  The top 25% of those teams will advance and finish up in the Semifinal Round. Based on our score, we should advance in the Gold Division to the semi's and hopefully win it all.

BAND:
SERRA HIGH BAND PERFORMED IN THE ANNUAL MLK JR. PARADE! GREAT JOB GUYS!
