March 5-9

Week: March 5-9

BLOG --

Hello Q Nation!!!
If you would like to subscribe to my blog, please enter your e-mail address in the field at the top of this page. Serra High is a safe place for students!

WALK-OUTS:

We believe strongly in our students.  Recently, they have made clear to us that they believe some form of school safety, more than what we currently have, is needed. WE HEAR YOU!
On March 14, as you may have already heard, there will be a nationwide, 17-minute walk out of class, demonstration in schools across the nation. Our district's Superintendent has come forward and endorsed this action and all high school leaders met to talk about making sure the students' message is heard and also making sure it is safe.
In talking with some Serra students, and some community members who reached out to us and are members of organizations involved in this issue that live here in Tierrasanta, we have decided together to do a "walk-in." This means that we will have an activity before the walk-in during Period 2 (our students are planning that). Then, during period 3 we will talk about agenda to the students and then at 10 AM we will walk to the football field and participate in the 17 minutes and then return to class. This 17 minutes will including a variety of activities such as (examples) reading the students names and facts about them that passed away, reading poems, and pledging to be nicer to one another, as that is always a first defense. The walk-in is a great way for students to make their voices heard but also to do it in a way that is safe. YOUR CHILD DOES NOT HAVE TO PARTICIPATE! We have a plan for this!
At Serra High school we want to ensure that we:
1. Support our students and their voices. This is an exciting time in America for young people to create a movement and gain change in Congress!
2. We at Serra will be promoting kindness to others and making schools across the country safe. We are to show a united front on the issue of school safety. We can stand together for safe schools.
3. However we want to make sure we do not detract from the message being supported, and paint Serra in a bad light. We do this by enacting Civic Engagement at school. Students in other parts of the country have had bad publicity for marching into town well beyond the time an activity like this 17-minute one and creating havoc. This puts them and others in danger. While we have an amazing school at Serra, we also want to make sure kids are safe. We have plenty of opportunities in those two periods to make positive choices. Leaving campus of your own accord is a choice. However the same rules apply as if you left on any other day. We ask you talk to your children about positive Civic Engagement.

As Serra High School's Principal, I am so proud of our students in this moment and am excited for them. As a show of support, some staff will be out there to watch it happen. Students will plan and execute this with the help of adults but this is their time! They will plan it and lead it. Our presence will be present in a supportive fashion. Community members and parents spoken to, agree that this is the best course of action and are excited that Serra is teaching our children proper protocols for demanding action from our national leaders!

Teacher Feature!

Lorene Dabney holds all of her students accountable for reaching the standards in her PE classes.  She works as a team with the Admin, counselors, parents, and students to ensure students are successful. Coach Dab gives students multiple opportunities to make up missed points, and modifies assignments for students based on their physical capabilities or limitations. When students are not succeeding, she contacts parents and meets with them to discuss ways to both encourage and motivate students.  In two parent conferences this week, I watched Coach Dab give hope to both parents and students with her encouraging words.
